IWMC 2023, PORTUGAL:
Big challenges,
big opportunities and
big decisions
“We’re going to see more change in the next decade than we’ve probably seen in a century,” Bill Yeargin, Correct Craft, Inc
The overriding message from the ICOMIA World Marinas Conference (IWMC) for 2023 advised the marina industry to expect change, embrace change, and work together to create change that positions marinas at the centre of sustainable tourism.
Industry professionals from all over the world gathered at the fabulous Tivoli Conference Centre within Marina Vilamoura in mid October for two days of conference sessions and a full day field trip beyond Vilamoura to Marina de Lagos and Marina de Albufeira.
A conference report will appear in the November/December issue of Marina World.

Marina Port Mahón
MENORCA
: Marina Port Mahón supports protection of sperm whale nursery
Marina Port Mahón has signed up to Moby Mummy 23, a campaign launched in August by the Tursiops association to protect the sperm whale nursery in northern Menorca.
The 12m Irifi, used by the Tursiops team to carry out research, berthed at the marina during the summer to share its findings during its search for sperm whales in the northern part of the island.
The six-strong team involved in the Tursiops research project sailed more than 700nm to search for and track sperm whales and recently located four groups, formed of 36 individuals including nine calves, the highest number ever recorded since 2003 in the Balearic Islands. One of the pods consisted of 18 whales.
The data provided by Tursiops confirms that the north of Menorca is an area of vital importance for the Mediterranean sperm whale and has confirmed the nursery as a key area to be protected. The creation of the MPA sets out to minimise the negative impacts of human activity on the location. The project counts on the support of the Menorca Island Council, Menorca Lines, Marina Port Mahón, Prezer-Adalmo and Menorca Preservation.
